USC welcomes new department chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering

The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at the University of South Carolina is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert L. Mullen has been appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), effective January 1, 2010.

Dr. Mullen brings nearly 30 years of academic experience to our faculty, including nine as Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU)” says CEC interim dean Harry J. Ploehn. “He will be an outstanding mentor to our students and junior faculty, a scholar of the highest caliber, and a great addition to the College’s leadership team.” In addition to serving as professor and former chair at CWRU, Dr. Mullen is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), as well as a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). He is also a registered professional engineer in Ohio.

Dean Ploehn adds, “Professor David Waugh deserves our gratitude for coming out of retirement and serving as Interim Chair for the last two years as we searched for the right person to lead the department. We are all looking forward to welcoming Dr. Mullen and his wife, Nancy, as they join the CEC family and the Carolina community.”
