USC welcomes new department chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering
The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at the University of South Carolina
is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert
L. Mullen has been appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering (CEE), effective January 1, 2010.
Dr. Mullen brings nearly 30 years
of academic experience to our faculty, including nine as Chair of the Department
of Civil Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU)” says CEC interim
dean Harry J. Ploehn. “He will be an outstanding mentor to our students and junior
faculty, a scholar of the highest caliber, and a great addition to the College’s
leadership team.” In addition to serving as professor and former chair at CWRU,
Dr. Mullen is a fellow of the
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), as well as a member of the American
Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
(ASME), and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). He is also
a registered professional engineer in Ohio.
Dean Ploehn adds, “Professor David Waugh deserves our gratitude for coming out of
retirement and serving as Interim Chair for the last two years as we searched for
the right person to lead the department. We are all looking forward to welcoming

International REU program in Smart Structures
This collaborative REU program between the University of South Carolina, The University
of Akron and the University of Connecticut is accepting applications to perform
research in smart structures during the summer of 2010. The program provides undergraduates
with an opportunity to perform research in structural health monitoring and structural
control. Students will travel to the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
(KAIST) as part of the program. More information and the online application form

CEC Distinguished Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering
Congratulations to Dr. Jasim Imran for his appointment as “CEC Distinguished Professor
in Civil and Environmental Engineering” by President Pastides! Dr. Imran works in
the area of water resources. He and his research team pursue basic and applied research
in the fields of river mechanics, sediment transport, density and turbidity current,
mass gravity flow, and stratified flow.

Graduate Spotlight
Edward Henry “Chip” Stehmeyer, Jr.
Edward Henry “Chip” Stehmeyer, Jr., earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1974,
and served as the President for the Walter E. Rowe Student Chapter of ASCE. He continued
on at USC, to become Dr. James Radziminski’s first graduate student. He finished
the Masters of Engineering degree in 1975. Over the years Mr. Stehmeyer has received
recognition as the Naval Facilities Engineering Command’s Engineer of the Year in
1987 and also as one of the top ten engineers in Federal Service by the NSPE. He
was decorated with the Department of the Navy’s Meritorious Civil Service Award
in 1997, the Department of the Navy’s Superior Civilian Service Award in 2004, and
the State of South Carolina’s Order of the Silver Crescent in 2004.
With 31 years of federal service he has worked with the Naval Facilities Engineering
Command as Chief Engineer and Director of Capital Improvements, Southern Division.
He served as Director of Project development, Design and Constructions of approximately
$800 million annually for the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and other Department
of Defense Shore Facilities. In 2004 Chip went to work for the Center for Disease
Control as Director of Buildings and Facilities overseeing planning, design and
construction of a $1.5 billion recapitalization program for CDC’s laboratories and
scientific research facilities. Today “Chip” works as a Marine Structures Engineer
with Collins Engineers Inc., an ENR Top 500 Design Firm that provides services in
the transportation, marine and construction sector. Chip resides and works in Charleston,
South Carolina.
