Dr. Fabio Matta has been appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of Bridge Engineering
Congratulations to Dr. Fabio Matta. He has been appointed Associate Editor of the
Journal of Bridge Engineering, for a three year term effective April 28, 2010. The
journal, published by the American Society of Civil Engineers, is widely regarded
as the leading technical publication in the area of bridge engineering. As a member
of the Editorial Board, Dr. Matta is responsible for coordinating the peer-review
process for manuscripts submitted by researchers and practitioners from all over
the world about issues, projects, materials, design, fabrication, construction,
inspection, evaluation, safety, performance, management, retrofitting, strengthening,
repair, and demolition.
USC’s Lesley Joseph Wins Udall Scholarship
Lesley Joseph has been awarded a 2010 Udall Scholarship, the ninth USC student to
win the scholarship since 1999, but USC’s eleventh win in the competition. Two former
University Udall Scholars won the award twice, as sophomores and juniors. Joseph’s
Udall Scholarship was awarded in the environmental careers category.

2010 Research abroad experience for undergradutes in Hydraulic Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of South Carolina
(USC) is pleased to announce the Summer 2010 Research Abroad Experience in Hydraulic
Engineering Program. The program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation
(NSF) project PIRE: Modeling of Flood Hazards and Geomorphic Impacts of Levee Breach
and Dam Failure. Qualified undergraduates from Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Geosciences or related fields will have the opportunity to conduct laboratory and
field based summer research at the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium (UCL),
Instituto Superior Técnico, (IST) and Laboratórío Nacional de Engenharía Civil (LNEC),
Portugal, or University of Auckland, New Zealand

USC Welcomes New Faculty Member - Dr. Fabio Matta
Fabio Matta joined USC, structures group, February 1, 2010. He comes to us from
the University of Miami where he served over 2 years as Research Assistant Professor
in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering. He also
served as the Associate Director of the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research
Center for Repair of Buildings and Bridges with Composites (RB2C)

CEC Distinguished Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering
Congratulations to Dr. Jasim Imran for his appointment as “CEC Distinguished Professor
in Civil and Environmental Engineering” by President Pastides! Dr. Imran works in
the area of water resources. He and his research team pursue basic and applied research
in the fields of river mechanics, sediment transport, density and turbidity current,
mass gravity flow, and stratified flow.
